Rokeby filmjölk yoghurt review
Here we will give a hands-on, taste-tested review of Rokeby probiotic filmjölk yoghurt. We’ll look into the benefits, ingredients, nutrition and flavour of this drinkable yoghurt.
For this review we have tested the original, unflavoured version.
You can find this filmjölk in Coles and Woolworths supermarkets and other food stores in Australia.
What is filmjölk?
Filmjölk is a traditional Swedish fermented milk product which in simple terms is very similar to a kefir but technically a yoghurt.
It’s similar to kefir in that it is drinkable and contains many different strains of live cultures. It often has around 15 strains which is far more than normal yoghurt which can have as little as two strains.
And it’s similar to yoghurt in that it is technically a yoghurt and not fermented with kefir grains as a kefir is. However, it is traditionally fermented at room temperature as opposed to normal yoghurt which is warmed for fermentation.
Confused? Just think of filmjölk as a kefir!

Ingredients of Rokeby filmjölk yoghurt
The ingredients are very clean and simple, just whole milk, live cultures, probiotics and lactase.
It’s a little odd that they list ‘live cultures’ and ‘probiotics’ as all probiotics are live cultures. For clarity, probiotics are live cultures (ie microorganisms) which have been shown to bring health benefits.
It’s good to see they use whole milk and not powdered milk which some commercials kefir do.
The enzyme lactase is included to further reduce the lactose content in the product.
So these ingredients make it a very natural product - that’s a good start!
Benefits of Rokeby filmjölk yoghurt
This filmjölk comes with various health benefits, especially related to its probiotic content. We’ll compare some health measures against two kefir - Table of Plenty and The Collective protein kefir.
Live cultures
The main benefit of this filmjölk is the probiotics (ie live beneficial microbes) it contains.
It includes an impressive 15 different strains of live cultures:
Bifidobacterium infantis
Bifidobacterium lactis
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. Lactis
Lactobacillus fermentum
Lactobacillus paracasei
Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. Lactis
Lactobacillus rhamnosus
Lactococcus lactis subsp. Cremoris
Lactococcus lactis subsp. Lactis
Lactococcus lactis sub. lactis biovar diacetylactis
Leuconostoc mesenteroides
Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides
Streptococcus thermophiles
Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. Bulgaricus.
In terms of the amount of bacteria present, there’s a minimum of 20 billion colony forming units per 100g. However, this is below the 37 billion in Table of Plenty kefir.
Postbiotics
Postbiotics are essentially things probiotics produce during fermentation. These include healthy short-chain fatty acids which nourish our gut lining and may help reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
Protein
This filmjölk has a decent protein content at 3.5%, which is a bit higher than Table of Plenty but less than half that of The Collective protein kefir.
Calcium
This filmjölk also has a good amount of calcium at 132mg per 100g. This is more than Table of Plenty (120mg) but significantly less than The Collective protein kefir (200mg).
Low in lactose
Rokeby filmjölk claims to be low in lactose (0.8g per 100g), however most other brands don’t state their lactose content so it’s hard to compare. Babushka’s kefir is the only one we have reviewed so far which also states their lactose content which is 3.7g per 100g.
Vitamins and minerals
This filmjölk is also a good source of:
magnesium - which supports bone health, muscle function and energy production
phosphorus - which is important for bone and teeth health and energy metabolism
vitamins B2 and B12 - which support energy production, nerve function and immunity
Appearance
It appears like a runny yoghurt - with some big bubbles holding on the surface.
Texture
It has a fairly thick mouthfeel like you would expect of a runny yoghurt.
Flavour
The aroma is quite clean - just of slightly soured milk. There’s no funky aromas like some kefir have.
In terms of taste, it has a fairly low level of sourness and it is generally like milk. However, it does have a soft effervescence (similar to some kefir) which gives it some sparkling mineral water characteristics.
Overall, the taste is good, clean, milky and natural - but I’d prefer more sourness.
Use
This filmjölk would work well in smoothies, on cereal or with fruit - basically in any scenario you would normally use yoghurt or kefir.
Cost of Rokeby filmjölk yoghurt
You can buy a 750ml bottle from Coles or Woolworths for $5.15 - which I think compares well to kefir in supermarkets.
Summary
4.75 stars out of 5.
A nice tasting filmjölk made from whole milk with clean ingredients and great bacterial diversity.
Pros
15 strains of live cultures
natural ingredients
good source of vitamins and minerals
good value
Cons
while the taste is generally nice, I would really like it to be more sour personally
not as much actual amount of probiotics (ie colony forming units) compared to Table of Plenty kefir (but plenty more than other kefir)
