Remedy kombucha review

Remedy kombucha

Here we will give a hands-on, taste-tested review of Remedy kombucha. We’ll look into the benefits, ingredients, nutrition and flavour of this popular kombucha.

For this review we have taste-tested the ginger lemon version.

Remedy kombucha is available in UK and Australian supermarkets.

Ingredients of Remedy kombucha

Remedy is a sugar-free, low-calorie kombucha which means that it largely relies on natural flavourings and sweeteners for taste. However, in this version they do use ginger juice and lemon juice - although in very small quantities.

It is not a kombucha made with love, but rather a mass produced one.

A word on sweeteners

Regular readers will know that I don’t love sweeteners - whether they are natural or artificial. This is because artificial sweeteners have been shown to negatively affect gut microbe composition - and so it could be that natural sweeteners also have a negative affect on your gut. But more research is needed. In any case, I’d prefer to avoid sweeteners altogether to be on the safe side. This is a personal choice though and essentially a trade off between some sugar (which is not good) and natural sweeteners (which may or may not be shown to be unhealthy in future).

Read more about the natural sweetener stevia and some of the research (with mixed results) that has been done on it.

Here’s the specific ingredients of Remedy kombucha: raw kombucha (carbonated water, sugar, black tea leaves, green tea leaves, traditional kombucha culture), ginger juice (2%), flavour enhancer (erythritol), lemon juice, natural ginger flavouring, sweetener (steviol glycosides).

Now you may be surprised to see it includes a ‘flavour enhancer’ in the form of erythritol and you might be wondering if that it is similar to MSG - it’s not. Erythritol is an organic compound which is known as a sugar alcohol and it is used as a low-calorie sweetener.

Benefits of Remedy kombucha

This kombucha comes with some key health benefits.

Probiotics

The main benefit of this kombucha is the probiotics (ie live healthy bacteria) it contains.

However there is no mention of the amount of bacteria in each serving. Nor is there an indication of how many strains were used - however, bank on there being only one!

Postbiotics

Postbiotics are essentially things probiotics produce during fermentation. These include healthy short-chain fatty acids which nourish our gut lining and may help reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Low in calories

This kombucha has zero sugar and only 3 calories per 100ml. So at the end of the day it’s a whole lot healthier than soft drink!

Green tea

Green tea contains polyphenols which are strong antioxidants.

Studies have shown green tea may also:

  • increase the amount of calories you burn

  • improve cholesterol levels

  • help control blood sugar levels

Flavour

The aroma is a strong mix of ginger and lemon with a slight unappealing funkiness.

The taste is rather weak and underwhelming with only a little ginger and lemon coming through. It’s not surprising that the taste is quite bland given the low levels of actual juice used.

The carbonation is too high and it’s a bit like drinking soda water.

Cost of Remedy kombucha

In both the UK and Australia you can find various sizes of Remedy kombucha in supermarkets and other food stores. It’s priced at the lower end of the market and generally available much cheaper online in bulk.
