Biomel probiotic gut shot review

Biomel probiotic gut shot

Here we will give a hands-on review of Biomel’s probiotic, dairy-free gut shot. In this review we have tested the Belgian chocolate flavour.

About Biomel

Biomel is a UK company which makes a range of dairy and gluten-free products for gut health.

Their drinks, including this gut shot, are made in London.

Ingredients of Biomel’s probiotic gut shot

One of the key selling points of this gut shot is that it is dairy free, gluten free and vegan.

Specifically it contains: coconut milk (purified water, pressed coconut), raw cane sugar, cacao, chicory root fibre, gellan gum, guar gum, sea salt, vitamins B6, D, calcium and billions of live active cultures.

Benefits of Biomel’s gut shot

This gut shot comes with various health benefits.

Probiotics

Unlike many other gut shots, this shot includes live bacteria to populate your gut.

The cultures included are B. bifidum, B. coagulans and L. plantarum.

Unfortunately there is no specific information on the amount of those bacteria present (ie colony forming units), apart from there being ‘billions of live active cultures’ in the shot.

Prebiotics

This drink contains chicory root fibre which will feed the good bacteria in your gut and help them multiply.

Read more about the benefits of prebiotics.

Polyphenols

The gut shot also contains cacao which is rich in polyphenols which your good bacteria will also feast on.

Vitamins and minerals

This gut shot is also a good source of:

  • calcium

  • vitamin B6

  • vitamin D

Calcium is included to support your digestive enzymes and the vitamins support immune function.

Appearance

The liquid has a dark milky appearance.

Texture

The liquid is runny, however it has a nice and thick mouthfeel.

Flavour

The aroma is primarily of coconut with some chocolate coming through.

The taste is luxurious with rich coconut dominant supported by earthy dark chocolate notes.

I find the taste very pleasant, but I wouldn’t want it any more rich.

Cost

I bought a 125ml bottle from a big Sainsbury’s for £1.20 - which I think is fantastic value.

Summary

4.75 stars out of 5.

A delicious dairy and gluten-free gut shot, packed with both probiotics and prebiotics, for a good price.

Pros

  • dairy and gluten free

  • 3 strains of bacteria

  • contains prebiotics

  • great taste

  • added vitamins and minerals

Cons

  • more information on the colony forming units of the bacteria would be good

  • if you are averse to rich drinks, you might find this bordering on too rich
