Mrs Toddy's Recovery tonic review
Here we will give a hands-on, taste-tested review of Mrs Toddy's Recovery tonic. We’ll look into the benefits, ingredients, nutrition and flavour of this healthy tonic with gut health goodness.
This tonic is available in Australia in Woolworths stores and some other supermarkets.
What is a tonic drink?
A tonic is a drink made with ingredients which improve health and wellbeing. Tonics often contain herbs, spices, botanicals or other natural ingredients which may have restorative, energising or detoxifying properties.
Perhaps it’s easier to think of this drink as a larger gut health shot.
Ingredients of Mrs Toddy's Recovery tonic
The ingredients of this tonic are filtered water, turmeric, ginger, lemon, coconut blossom nectar, pepper, cinnamon and mushroom extract.
As you can see, the ingredients are all natural and there’s nothing concerning in there.
A note on some of the ingredients if you were curious:
Coconut blossom nectar - this is used to add sweetness. It has a lower glycaemic index than raw sugar which means it causes a slower rise in blood sugar
Pepper - this is included because it contains piperine which dramatically increases the absorption of curcumin which is the main active compound in turmeric
Benefits of Mrs Toddy's Recovery tonic
Even though this tonic is not specifically marketed as a gut health product - it is presented more as a general wellness product - there is plenty in here which will help your gut and beyond. Amongst other things, it is a fantastic source of antioxidants.
Turmeric
Anti-inflammatory: Studies have shown curcumin has strong anti-inflammatory properties, which may help with arthritis.
Antioxidant: Antioxidants can neutralise free radicals.
Brain function: May boost brain-derived neurotrophic factor, linked to improved brain function and a lower risk of brain diseases.
Heart Disease: May help protect against heart disease.

Ginger
Ginger has various health benefits for the gut and beyond.
Digestive health: Ginger can alleviate nausea and vomiting
Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects: Contains gingerol, a substance with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties
Pain relief: Studies have shown it may help reduce muscle pain and soreness due to its anti-inflammatory properties
Lowering blood sugar levels: Studies show ginger can help in managing blood sugar levels

Lemon juice
Lemon juice contains vitamin C and flavonoids which are strong antioxidants.
Lemon juice can also improve digestive health (in part due to the fibre it contains) and help in weight control.

Cinnamon
Cinnamon is also a strong antioxidant.
It has also been shown to lower blood sugar levels and may help protect against heart disease.

Mushroom extract
The label doesn’t specify which type of mushroom extract is included, however, this ingredient is present because it is an adaptogen.
Adaptogens are substances which are believed to help the body adapt to and manage stress, and improve general wellbeing.
Appearance
Once shaken it has a cloudy orange-brown appearance. If left for a while, a sediment forms at the bottom of the bottle or glass.
Texture
It has a thin, watery mouthfeel when compared to gut health shots.
Flavour
The aroma is mainly of turmeric and ginger.
The taste is quite watery and weak - again with turmeric and ginger coming through most. There’s a little heat from the ginger and pepper, and there’s not much acidity.
Overall the taste is not bad, but I can’t help think of it as a weak and watered down gut shot. It lacks the intensity and energising feeling you get from the concentrated flavour of a gut shot. It’s a bit underwhelming because of this.
Cost of Mrs Toddy's Recovery tonic
This 250ml drink sells for $5 from Woolworths.
