Lyttos Greek style yoghurt review

Lyttos Greek style yoghurt

Here we will give a hands-on, taste-tested review of Lyttos Greek style yoghurt. We’ll look into the benefits, ingredients, nutrition and flavour of this Aldi own-brand yoghurt.

This yoghurt is available in Aldi stores in Australia.

Ingredients of Lyttos Greek style yoghurt

This is an authentic natural yoghurt with just milk, milk solids, cream and live cultures.

It doesn’t contain any additives like thickeners, sweeteners or flavourings. And unlike Aldi’s other own-brand yoghurt Brooklea organic natural yoghurt, it doesn’t use milk powders.

As we will see, this cheaper of the two Aldi natural yoghurts is better in most ways.

Benefits of Lyttos Greek style yoghurt

This yoghurt comes with various health benefits you would expect from a natural yoghurt.

For context, we’ll compare a few key factors against Woolworths Greek style yoghurt and Brooklea organic natural yoghurt - which are similar, natural yoghurts.

Live cultures

This yoghurt does contain live cultures, however there is no information on which strains are present.

For comparison, Woolworths includes four strains of live cultures and Brooklea just states it “includes Acidophilus and Bifidus” (which leaves it unclear exactly how many strains it includes).

In terms of the amount of actual live cultures present (ie colony forming units), Lyttos again gives no information. In contrast, there are a minimum of 100 million CFU per 100g in both Woolworths and Brooklea.

Postbiotics

Postbiotics are essentially things probiotics produce during fermentation. These include healthy short-chain fatty acids which nourish our gut lining and may help reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Other health measures

Fat: This yoghurt has high fat levels at 9.7%. Whereas Brooklea has less than half that at 4.5% and Woolworths has 7.6%.

Protein: Its protein content is fairly good at 4.9% - which is comparable to Woolworths (5%) and Brooklea (4.8%). However this is significantly below protein-rich brands like Procal and Chobani.

Calcium: Its calcium content is also fairly good at 170mg per 100g - which is better than Brooklea (144mg) but below Woolworths (189mg).

Lyttos Greek style yoghurt in a bowl

Appearance

It appears very thick and maintains a very irregular shape in the bowl.

Texture

The texture is lovely - very thick with an even consistency and delightfully creamy thanks to all the fat!

Flavour

The aroma is mainly of cheddar-like savoury cheese and soured milk as you would expect.

In terms of the taste, I absolutely love it - but boy is it sour! The first time you have it the sides of your tongue tingle.

Otherwise there is a fantastic rich creaminess and subtle savoury cheese flavours. The flavour is quite similar to Tamar Valley Greek style yoghurt - rich creaminess backed up by strong sourness.

Overall, the taste is excellent - provided you don’t mind this level of sourness.

Cost of Lyttos Greek style yoghurt

You can buy a 1kg tub from Aldi for $3.99.

Health benefits of yoghurt

Aside from the specific benefits listed above, especially related to probiotics and postbiotics, yoghurt has some other important health benefits.

Vitamins and minerals

Yoghurt is a source of various vitamins and minerals including:

  • calcium - which helps digestion and supports bone and teeth health

  • magnesium - which supports bone health, muscle function and energy production

  • phosphorus - which is important for bone and teeth health and energy metabolism

  • potassium - which supports heart, muscle, nerve and kidney health

  • vitamins B2 and B12 - which support immunity, energy production and cell and nerve function

  • vitamin A - supports vision, immune function, cell growth and healthy skin

Satiety and weight management

The high protein and low carbohydrate content in yogurt, especially Greek style yogurt, helps you feel fuller for longer which can help control your appetite. Greek yoghurt is often recommended by dietitians for this reason.

Reduced lactose

Compared to unfermented dairy products such as milk, yoghurt has lower levels of lactose as this is partially consumed by bacteria during the fermentation process. This makes it more digestible for people who have some degree of lactose intolerance.
