About Loving Foods
Loving Foods is a Manchester-based company which makes a range of fermented products including kimchi, kombucha, sauerkraut, apple cider vinegar, juice and hot sauce.
They are a certified organic producer by the Organic Food Federation.
As they state on their website, their ethos is to ‘apply centuries-old techniques to modern dietary requirements, developing new tastes and flavours.’
Ingredients of Loving Food’s sauerkraut
This is very natural and authentic sauerkraut so it only contains cabbage and Celtic sea salt. It is also certified as organic and handmade, as well as being vegan and gluten free.
Benefits
This sauerkraut has health benefits in two key ways.
Probiotics
Because this is an unpasteurised, fermented product, it is packed with live probiotic bacteria which your gut will love. And through the fermentation process it contains a lot of healthy enzymes for your gut.
Read more about the benefits of probiotics.
Prebiotics
The cabbage in this sauerkraut is great prebiotic which means that it will feed the good bacteria in your gut and help them multiply.
Flavour
This is a very simple and authentic product and so the flavour is similarly uncomplicated (especially compared to their Hot ‘n’ Smoky kimchi).
The aroma is unsurprisingly of cabbage ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, perhaps with a slight lemon juice vibe.
The taste is classic sauerkraut - as in slightly acidic cabbage. It does have a slightly funky finish which isn’t as fresh as pasteurised sauerkraut (which aren’t living products). It does fade as you eat more of it though. This is common with live sauerkrauts and in my mind it’s the trade off to have the benefit of its live bacteria.
Texture
It has a nice crunchy texture which can add an extra component to a dish.
Uses
This sauerkraut is a versatile side dish and it would work well with meats as the acidity would cut through richness of the meat.
They also suggest putting in a smoothie which sounds weird at first, but I could actually see it working well. I’ll have to try that out as it would be good to add some probiotics to my breakfast smoothie in a simple way.
Cost of Loving Food’s sauerkraut
A 475g jar costs £6.95 from the Loving Foods website.
Summary
4.25 stars out of 5.
An authentic, simple, live and organic sauerkraut which offers various health benefits.
Pros
organic and free of nasties
full of live bacteria
great source of fibre
various uses
Cons
not the cheapest (but as you would expect from an organic, small batch, live product)
the slightly funky taste of live and fermented sauerkraut may be surprising if you’re used to cheaper, pasteurised (ie not probiotic) sauerkrauts
