Gut by Giulia Enders reviewed

5 out of 5 stars

In my opinion there is no better book to introduce gut health than this one by Giulia Enders.

Simple, readable and funny

In simple terms, "Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ" introduces the many aspects to the gut and how these affect your health. Enders is a gastroenterologist and so has deep knowledge and experience in the field of gut health. She is able to convey scientific concepts very clearly, simply and with (a good dose of German) humour. For a book about health and science, it is incredibly readable. I’m not exaggerating when I say it is a genuine page turner! I remember reading it the first time and being captivated by all the interesting aspects about the gut we’re never taught. I felt like I was learning so much about a part of my body that has been neglected up to now.

What the book covers

As an introduction, Enders talks through each aspect of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the colon, and explains the specialised purpose of each region.

She also explains the many roles the gut plays in various bodily functions beyond digestion, including obesity, immunity, mental health and much more. She highlights the emerging area of psychobiotics which explores how gut flora may influence psychological wellbeing. The connection between the gut and the brain is a central theme, with Enders explaining the gut's potential role in mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

Enders also offers practical guidance on enhancing gut health through dietary and lifestyle adjustments and the importance of a balanced microbiome. This advice is very helpful and insightful to someone with a burgeoning interest in gut health.

Writing style

While the book is rich in scientific detail and research evidence, the writing is very accessible and weaves in personal stories to make it feel less like a textbook and more like an entertaining guide. It really is funny and engaging throughout.

Summary

5 out of 5 stars

Overall, "Gut" is a very engaging exploration of gut health and the perfect starting point for someone new to the world of gut health. Its humour and genuinely fascinating facts will keep the pages turning. You will learn a lot about your inner workings along the way.
